Director General

Overview:

IFFO is the international trade association for the fishmeal and fish oil industry, IFFO members are companies in the industry and related sectors. The Director General is the accountable officer for the organisation. The Director General’s responsibility is to ensure that members’ interests are represented globally across private public and political sectors and to implement the Vision and Strategy of the organisation as agreed and set by the board of directors.
Based at the IFFO Head Office in London, the position offers variety, worldwide travel and being part of a small, flexible team within a successful, well established and respected organisation. The Director General is also responsible for the IFFO offices in Lima, Peru and Beijing, China.

Relationships:
Reports to: This position reports to the president and board of IFFO

Liaison with: IFFO board of directors, IFFO members, NGO’s, government and UN agencies, other stakeholders and media.

Line Management: Operations Director, China Director, Technical Director, Market Research Director.

Main tasks of job:

  • Lead the senior management team through effective performance management to ensure the individual and collective performance is maximised and strategic objectives set by the Board of Directors are achieved.
  • Demonstrate inspiring leadership and foster a culture of excellence and continual professional development.
  • Work with the President and Board of Directors in developing the vision for the continued success of IFFO and deliver the strategic goals of the organisation.
  • Promote and develop IFFO’s profile and ability to influence all stakeholders internationally through building effective relationships with relevant private sector organizations governmental and statutory bodies, all IFFO members, key participants in the sector and the media.
  • Represent and defend the reputation of IFFO members through working with the media, presenting at industry conferences and other channels as needed.
  • Propose and manage optimum organisational and financial performance through effective monitoring and reporting procedures against annual budgets, ensuring corrective action is taken and when required. Report financial performance to the Board of Directors and file audited annual accounts as required under UK Companies law.
  • Establish policies and practices that ensure a high level of member services, attract new members and retain existing members. Deliver services that support members’ business interests and the long term success of the organisation.
  • Advise the Board of Directors on good governance under UK Companies law, acting as Company Secretary.

Essential Skills:

  • Strong visionary leadership with demonstrable ability to develop effective relationships with the external community and opinion leaders, instilling confidence from stakeholders across private, public and political sectors, nationally and internationally.
  • Able to influence and work with the highest levels of international business and government.
  • Ability to present and speak publically at conferences and other events and represent IFFO with the media.
  • An understanding of multicultural stakeholders and their differing styles and ways of working.
  • Excellent international track record within the overall value chains of the animal feed and or fish farming industries with over eight years at senior management level.
  • Experience of creating and delivering effective strategies
  • Strong commercial and political acumen with the ability to initiate, lead and manage change.
  • Good team building and coaching skills.
  • Experience knowledge of key issues both economic and environmental pertaining to the small pelagic fishing, animal feed and or fish farming industries
  • Highly motivated self-starter, articulate with good language skills including fluent English (Spanish also desirable)
  • Frequent international travel and remote / mobile working is required

Other:
The position is full time and permanent. The appointment will be subject to a 3 month probationary period, after which time a contract of permanent employment will be offered.

Technical Manager

Overview:

Responsible for managing the delivery of regulatory and legislative information to IFFO members, project management of IFFO technical projects, and supporting the IFFO Technical Director in the delivery of the technical department’s objectives.  Based at the IFFO Head Office in London.  The position offers variety, some international travel and being part of a small, flexible team within a successful and respected organisation.

Relationships:

Reports to:                  Technical Director

Liaison with:                IFFO team, IFFO members, third parties and general public 

Line Management:   none

Main tasks of job:

  • Detailed understanding of the legislative and regulatory issues of relevance to the IFFO membership, including the fishmeal and fish oil industries, and the aquafeed and animal feed industries.  Maintain an awareness of proposed legislative changes.  Have the ability to conduct regulatory impact assessments and be able to communicate clearly their potential impact on the industry.  Of particular importance are regulatory frameworks such as Codex, EU, IMO, and national governments relevant to the IFFO membership.      
  • Establish a network of contacts within the IFFO membership, and externally, in order to retrieve and communicate information that will support IFFO members’ businesses.
  • Represent IFFO in external fora, across a diverse range of subjects that are relevant to the sector.
  • Support the Technical Director in the delivery of services to members relating to nutritional and production related information, regulatory controls in main markets, standards and certification.
  • Support the Technical Director in the management of IFFO technical projects, monitoring, reviewing and reporting on delivery.  The Technical Manager will hold responsibility for the delivery of specific projects.

The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by organisational needs and the overall business objectives of the organisation.  

Ideally, candidates are expected to hold approximately 10 years’ experience in relevant roles supporting the skills described.  A UK work permit is essential as the job will be based in the IFFO London office.  Evidence of good report writing, public speaking and scientific skills is necessary as these are core skills for the position.  Experience of working internationally in similar roles will be viewed advantageously.

Essential Skills:

  • 10 years or more experience in fishing, aquaculture, aquafeed or animal feed industries
  • Understanding of fishery management, environmental NGO’s and sustainability trends
  • Ability to communicate clearly and to present information clearly and concisely
  • Provide evidence of technical report writing to a high standard
  • Ability to work within small teams
  • Knowledge of Spanish would be an advantage
