IFFO RS Technical Advisory Committee
IFFO RS utilizes the skills of a Technical Advisory Committee (“committee”) to assist with the development and implementation of the IFFO RS Version 2 Certification Programme for the Marine Ingredient fishing industry. The programme is adapted from FAO Normative Documents: the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries Management (1995), FAO Ecolabeling Guidelines (2006), FAO Guidance, APFIC Guideline of 2014“Regional guidelines for the management of tropical trawl fisheries in Asia” and ILO conventions.
The Committee is an objective-based group, representative of marine ingredient manufacturer, fishery science, management and environment. Representation is sought from both fishery specific and marine ingredient management and key stakeholder interests.
The Terms of Reference of the Technical Advisory Committee are as follows:
- The function of the Committee is to manage technical matters relating to the development of the IFFO RS V2 Certification Criteria including the technical relevance and appropriateness of the programme for use as a third party, accredited certification programme.
- Support the development and implementation of a credible and robust certification programme for the marine ingredient industry that will provide assurance to the global supply chain that all certified factories to this programme act in a responsible and ethical manner.
- To develop and keep the technical certification specifications for V2 of the IFFO RS programme to confirm their relevance to current practice and market requirements for approval by the IFFO RS Governance Board.
- Based on member and environmental insight of marine ingredient industry, provide knowledge and guidance that will contribute to accurate interpretation and alignment of the IFFO RS V2 standard for assessment purposes.
- Provide advice by way of decisions, proceedings, and meeting minutes to the IFFO RS Governance Board on any amendments considered to be necessary or desirable to ensure the accuracy, relevance and credibility of the programme.
- Provide input and advice on documents prepared on the technical interpretation of the IFFO RS Certification Criteria and supporting technical guidance documentation used in the assessment of marine ingredient manufacturers as V2 of the IFFO RS programme develops and evolves.
- Monitor any changes to the FAO or ILO Normative documents or newly issued FAO or ILO guidance relevant to fishery assessment or legislative documentation that are used in the IFFO RS programme and incorporate the required amendments into the IFFO RS V2 Certification Criteria.

Antoine Dangy joined OLVEA Fish Oils in 2014. He holds a Master degree in Agronomy and has a background as a Food Safety Quality Assurance (FSAQ) manager for a tuna fishing fleet in Africa. Thanks to both fishing and African environment experiences he is now a Sustainability and Sourcing Development Manager for OLVEA Fish Oils. Working on implementing sustainable supply chain in the sea food industry has always been Antoine's vocation as he holds a huge passion for sailing the marine environment in general. During the past 2 years he has used IFFO RS and other standards to promote responsibilty in OLVEA Fish Oils sourcing areas.
Francisco joined IFFO in 2010 and was promoted to Head of Standards in 2013. In 2015 IFFO RS became independent and Francisco became the Head of Operations of IFFO RS Limited. As well as managing IFFO RS, he is also Chair of the Te3chnical Committee and the Improvers Programme Committee. Francisco Graduated from the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina in Lima, Peru with a fisheries engineering degree before obtaning and MSc in Marine Ecology and Environmental Management from Queen Mary University, London.
Michiel holds an MSc. degree in Biology with a specialisation in Aquaculture and Fisheries, from Wageningen University (NL). He has worked since mid-2012 for the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) in the function of Standards and Certification Coordinator. He is also the secretary for the ASC Responsible Feed Project, with as main aim to develop the ASC Responsible Feed Standard. Before working with ASC, Michiel has worked several years as Export Manager for fish feed producer Coppens International, being responsible for key markets in Eastern Europe/Balkan and South East Asia. Prior to that he worked with the aquaculture and fisheries department of the FAO for the Central Asia and Turkey region, being based in Ankara.
Michel Kaiser is the Professor of Marine Conservation Ecology at the School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University. He is an independent Member of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, the UK Marine Science Coordination Committee, and he chairs the Seafish Industry Authority’s Science Advisory Group. After gaining his Ph.D. in 1991, he joined CEFAS to lead research on the effects of human activities (fishing and aquaculture) on the marine environment. He joined Bangor University in 1998 where he has expanded these interests to encompass social and economic consequences of different approaches of managing fishing activities. He has authored over 180 peer reviewed publications and has written or edited 5 books.His current research focuses on techniques to achieve sustainable use of the marine environment, with a particular emphasis on developing techniques to minimise ecological impacts of fisheries and aquaculture, and research to underpin the appropriate use of marine protected areas. The latter focuses on recovery and dispersal dynamics in seabed communities and integration of spatial social and economic valuation of marine biodiversity. His research group provides scientific advice to the Welsh Government and the Isle of Man Government.
Søren Anker Pedersen
Søren Anker Pedersen is chief biologist at Marine Ingredients Denmark since 2015. He has a wide practical experience in marine ecology, covering more than 20 years of research in Greenland, Norwegian and Danish waters. His research includes zooplankton studies, recruitment processes for fish and shrimp, stock assessments of fish, shrimp and scallops, ecosystem modeling, as well as the effects of climate, ocean currents and fishing on the evolution of marine ecosystems. He was Professional Officer at ICES for 8 years e.g. as coordinator for the EMPAS project "Environmentally sound fisheries management in protected areas" and the ICES Training Programme. His Ph.D. thesis “Mortality on northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) and species interactions on the offshore West Greenland shrimp grounds” is from University of Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1995.
Trygve Berg Lea
Trygve Berg Lea is sustainability manager in the fishfeed company Skretting with headquarters in Stavanger, Norway. Skretting is part of Nutreco - a global leader in animal nutrition and fish feed.He has worked with different aspects of fish nutrition for the last 30 years. His primary interest has been working with implementing new research findings into new products and knowledge support for the aquaculture industry. He now leads the work in Skretting within the area of sustainability.Mr. Lea graduated from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in 1981 and has since then worked in various positions within salmon aquaculture.
