October 2023 Editorial

Negotiations between European coastal states regarding quota sharing of Northeast Atlantic species started in September and are expected to culminate with the North east Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) in November. IFFO is supportive of the campaign currently led by the NAPA group. It aims to call on the Coastal States to commit to long-term, science-based management of Northeast Atlantic pelagic stocks, whose future ‘hangs in the balance’.

In the same timeframe, IFFO is part of another key initiative, that of the Global Roundtable on Marine Ingredients, based on data sharing and collaboration to drive positive change in West African fisheries. This initiative has materialised in the full release of a human rights impact assessment in Senegal and Mauritania, conducted by a third party company, Partner Africa.

Why is IFFO taking part in those programmes? Due diligence, data sharing and stakeholder engagement are core to sustainability policies, now increasingly assessed by investors and value chain actors through an economic, social and governance (ESG) lens: economic, social and governance sit on an equal foot and all three are meant to create value and be a catalyst for change.

The IFFO conference, starting on the 23rd October, will review these concepts and initiatives through presentations and panel discussions involving leading experts. Make sure you have registered! We look forward to seeing you in Cape Town.
